Chennai: The BJP has called for the Tamil film 'Amaran', based on the life of Major Mukund Varadarajan, and starring Sivakarthikeyan and Sai Pallavi in lead roles, to be screened in schools and colleges across Tamil Nadu.

Major Varadarajan, who was killed in a terrorist encounter in Kashmir in 2014, is the central figure in the film. However, the Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI) has criticized the film for allegedly portraying Kashmir and the Muslims negatively. The BJP has argued that the film should be more widely publicized to foster patriotism among the youth.

BJP urged the state government to facilitate screenings in educational institutions, claiming the film would help instil a sense of national pride. Those opposing the film are against the unity and security of the country, he added.

Meanwhile, the SDPI has accused the film of spreading anti-Muslim sentiments, a view shared by the pro-Tamil group.

Directed by Rajkumar Periasamy and produced by Raaj Kamal Films International, together with Sony Pictures Films India, 'Amaran' was released on October 31.

The film has received positive feedback from audiences, and key figures such as Chief Minister MK Stalin and Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin have praised the film and its crew.
