Kochi: Veteran actress Mallika Sukumaran has strongly criticised the Association of Malayalam Movie Artists (AMMA) for allowing individuals facing serious allegations to contest its upcoming elections.

Speaking out against what she described as selective rule changes, Mallika questioned the organisation’s decision to amend its policy, allegedly to benefit actor Baburaj.

“The rule that bars accused individuals from contesting should not be changed just for Baburaj. Who decides these changes in the system as per individual interests?” she told Mathrubhumi News.

Mallika emphasised that comparing Baburaj’s work in securing sponsors or profits for the association to the gravity of the accusations against him was inappropriate.

“The rule clearly states that pension beneficiaries and accused persons cannot contest. If those facing serious charges are allowed to run, then why not pensioners?” she asked, calling out the apparent double standards.

She also expressed agreement with actor Anoop Chandran’s view that Baburaj’s candidature might reflect personal interests.

“If people facing accusations can contest, then why was Dileep ousted from the organisation? Why not just say ‘let the court decide’? Actor Siddique stepped aside due to a pending case against him; that’s the right thing to do,” she stated.

Mallika urged that AMMA must set a model for other organisations. “When rules are bent for Baburaj, naturally, people will start having doubts,” she said.

Mallika said she wasn’t confident the organisation would change for the better, though she hoped it would.

“It’s time to bring Mammootty or Mohanlal back as guardians of this association. Only their names can keep it going,” she added.
