Premkumar alleged that the remarks and reactions of the Sahitya Akademi Chairman were serious, and claimed he himself faced discrimination and injustice

Thiruvananthapuram: Actor Premkumar has spoken out regarding his recent Facebook post protesting lack of action against K Satchidanandan, following the latter’s criticism of the government and his (Premkumar’s) removal from the Film Academy. Premkumar alleged that the remarks and reactions of the Sahitya Akademi Chairman were serious, and claimed he himself faced discrimination and injustice.
“This is something I had tried to put behind me, considering it a closed chapter. During a period of hectic activity at the Film Academy, I was removed from my position as Academy Chairman on the eve of the state award announcement. I have no idea why. I have not received any official notification to this day and first learned of my removal through the media,” Premkumar alleged, addressing the media in Thiruvunanthapuram.

He added: “I made a well-intentioned comment regarding the Asha workers strike, and I was removed for that. While I was managing numerous responsibilities, what emergency necessitated my removal? I see no other reason. I was not even informed. I understand that removal and replacement fall under the discretionary powers of the government, and I have no opinion on that. But I didn’t even get a chance to thank my colleagues.”

Premkumar drew a comparison to everyday courtesy, saying: “If someone who regularly works at your home decides not to come anymore, they would at least be informed the day before, to settle any pending wages, and collect their belongings. That is common courtesy. That courtesy was not extended to me. I did not receive any notification or invitation even for subsequent cultural gatherings. I cannot compare myself to Satchidanandan sir, but the Sahitya Akademi and the Film Academy are two major cultural institutions in Kerala. Discrimination against someone in such an institution, based on a reaction, is apparent. It then made me feel that sir possesses some miraculous ability that I lack, as he continues to hold that position. I have no opinion on his continuation, but the manner in which my removal was handled was unjust.”
