K-pop supergroup BTS has landed at the centre of a renewed online controversy after lyrics from one of the group’s early songs resurfaced on social media, triggering accusations of ableism and glorification of sexual coercion, just as the band prepares for a highly anticipated comeback.

The debate erupted on X after a short clip from the lyric video of Skool Luv Affair, a 2014 track released during BTS’s rookie era, began circulating widely. The criticism focuses on a line from RM’s rap verse: “You know that her refusals / And bad words could never stop me / They could never retard me.”

Several users interpreted the verse as suggesting sexual coercion, while also condemning the use of the word “retard,” calling it an ableist slur. Posts accusing the group of “singing about rape” quickly gained traction, prompting intense reactions across social media.

Many critics denounced the group without referencing the full song. BTS fans, however, pushed back strongly, arguing that the lyrics were being taken out of context and misrepresented. Supporters said the lines reflect emotional persistence in the face of romantic rejection, not sexual violence.

The controversy comes at a pivotal moment for BTS, who are preparing to return to group activities after nearly four years without a full album release.

On Thursday, BigHit Music announced that BTS will release a new album titled “ARIRANG” on March 20, marking the group’s fifth studio album. The announcement was shared through the fan platform WeVerse, alongside international pre-order details. Retailer Target also confirmed exclusive vinyl and CD editions for global fans

Earlier this month, the agency had teased the comeback with a brief post reading: “March 20 comeback confirmed.” The group had previously revealed plans for a new album and world tour, with production beginning in mid-2025.

Adding to the excitement, BTS recently announced a massive 2026–2027 world tour, beginning in South Korea in April 2026 and running through March 2027, with over 70 dates across Asia, North America, South America, Australia, and Europe. It will be their first headline tour since the Permission to Dance on Stage concerts in 2021–22.

The comeback follows the completion of mandatory military service by all seven members. Suga, who served as a social service agent due to a shoulder injury, was the last to be discharged in June 2025. The remaining members, RM, Jin, Jimin, V, Jung Kook, and j-hope, served in the South Korean army under staggered enlistments that allowed time for solo projects during the group hiatus.
