The Russo Brothers have teased Avengers: Doomsday with a cryptic Instagram post, sparking theories about the Fantastic Four, Doctor Doom, and Marvel’s biggest crossover yet. Robert Downey Jr. returns, this time as the villain

Marvel fans are buzzing after filmmakers Joe and Anthony Russo — the directors behind some of the MCU’s biggest blockbusters — shared a blurred image on Instagram teasing their upcoming film, 'Avengers: Doomsday'. The cryptic photo, posted with the hashtag #DoomsdayIsComing, has sparked wild speculation about the storyline.
Sharp-eyed fans believe the markings resemble Reed Richards’ multiverse research from The Fantastic Four: First Steps. In that film, Richards’ chalkboard explored alternate realities, laying groundwork for what many now suspect will connect directly to the Avengers’ next major challenge. The presence of Doctor Doom, who appeared in the film’s post-credits scene speaking with Franklin Richards, has only fueled theories that the Fantastic Four will play a central role in the new Avengers saga.
In a seismic twist, Robert Downey Jr is set to return to the MCU, not as Iron Man but as the film’s main villain, Vincent Van Doom aka Doctor Doom.
The project also marks the highly anticipated comeback of the Russo Brothers, who previously helmed Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014), Civil War (2016), Infinity War (2018), and Endgame (2019).
'Avengers: Doomsday' promises to be Marvel’s most ambitious crossover yet, uniting the Avengers, X-Men, Fantastic Four, and Thunderbolts in one film.
The star-studded lineup includes Chris Hemsworth (Thor), Tom Hiddleston (Loki), Anthony Mackie (Captain America), Paul Rudd (Ant-Man), Simu Liu (Shang-Chi), Danny Ramirez (Falcon), Letitia Wright (Black Panther), and Winston Duke (M’Baku). The film is slated to hit theatres worldwide on December 18, 2026.
