Another relevant topic in the present juncture by political strategist and writer Shubrastha on `Impact of social media on political parties' was a lively session where she stressed for the democratisation of the social space. Known to be a vociferous speaker who work for the ideology of cultural civilisational nationalism in the North East, her projects is on the politics on the North East.
Though she says that she tries to be calm and composed for the session, she feels the social media space, which is a platform for all kinds of perspectives and discussions, have done more disruption.
She is surprised to know how violent we have become as a nation that we are not able to speak beyond nuances. Shubrastha says that we are labelled when we write editorials thich do not consider our point of view.
The activist says social media as a medium does not democratise the entire medium but it has done something fundamentally disruptive. Mentioning the recent incident in Cusat campus where north Indian students claimed they were given manipulated food during a workshop held on the campus, Shubrastha says it was easy for her to understand the students' plight as she too had a similar background like them. Who communalises the narrative here? Who brought in an issue which was not any issue?
The activist spoke about beef politics and is pained over some media distorting reality. She says it is not distorting reality but communalising the entire narattive.
The layers and layers which lie within a narrative are never questioned sometimes. The social media is there where a youth affected by the nuances of politics makes you feel ashamed. But it has its own disadvantages. How do the society which understands this and yet be aware of the pitfalls in the kind of narration.
She also spoke about dalit writers. Social media gives us a platform to vent out the feelings. Subhrashta admits the fact that social media is a world where lies are posted. There are all kinds of rumours. She asks do we limit our understanding of literature to just what the teller is telling. She asks why have we forgotton to read between the lines. We only negotiate on what is happenning only in social media.
