The annual Amarnath Yatra will commence on July 3 and run for 57 days, with registration opening from April 15, officials said.

Jammu: The annual Amarnath Yatra will commence on July 3, 2026, and conclude on August 28, coinciding with the festival of Raksha Bandhan, Jammu and Kashmir Lt Governor Manoj Sinha announced.
The 57-day pilgrimage will begin with the ‘Pratham Puja’ on June 29 (Jyeshtha Purnima), invoking blessings of Lord Shiva ahead of the yatra.
Amarnath Yatra 2026 registration: Dates, process and banks
Advance registration for the Amarnath Yatra will open from April 15 through both online and offline modes. Pilgrims can register at 554 designated bank branches across India, including J&K Bank, Punjab National Bank, State Bank of India and Yes Bank.
The registration process is mandatory for devotees planning to undertake the annual pilgrimage to the holy cave shrine.
Amarnath cave shrine: Location, significance and altitude
The Amarnath cave shrine, located at an altitude of 3,888 metres in Anantnag district, is one of the most revered Hindu pilgrimage sites.
The shrine houses a naturally formed ice stalagmite, believed by devotees to symbolise Lord Shiva. The structure waxes and wanes with the lunar cycle, adding to its religious significance.

Amarnath Yatra routes: Pahalgam and Baltal trek details
Pilgrims can reach the cave shrine through two primary routes:
- Pahalgam route: The traditional and scenic path spanning around 34 km, typically taking 3–5 days. The route passes through Chandanwari, Sheshnag and Panchtarni, and includes steep climbs such as Pissu Top and Mahagunas Pass.
- Baltal route: A shorter 14 km trek in Ganderbal district, allowing pilgrims to complete the yatra and return to base camp on the same day.
Facilities such as langars (community kitchens), tents and medical aid are provided along both routes to support pilgrims.
Helicopter services and pilgrimage arrangements
Helicopter services will also be available from both Pahalgam and Baltal routes for devotees seeking quicker access to the shrine.
Each year, thousands of pilgrims from across India and abroad participate in the Amarnath Yatra, making it one of the largest religious pilgrimages in the country.
