How to grow the world's most expensive Miyazaki mango at home | Step-by-step guide

The Miyazaki mango, often called the world's most expensive mango, is prized for its ruby-red skin, exceptional sweetness and premium market value. Originally cultivated in Japan, this rare variety can also be grown in India with the right care, patience and growing conditions. If you're looking to add this luxury fruit to your home garden, here's a step-by-step guide.

Why is Miyazaki Mango so expensive?

Known in Japan as the "Egg of the Sun", the Miyazaki mango is famous for its rich sweetness, vibrant red colour, smooth texture and limited production. The fruit requires specific growing conditions and intensive care, making it one of the most valuable mango varieties in the world. In premium markets, it has reportedly sold for several lakh rupees per kilogram.

1. Choose a healthy grafted sapling

Start with a quality-grafted Miyazaki mango sapling from a trusted nursery instead of growing it from seed. A grafted plant matures faster, produces better-quality fruit and offers a higher chance of successful cultivation. Use a large grow bag or pot with proper drainage if you're growing it on a terrace or balcony. 
 

2. Prepare nutrient-rich soil

Miyazaki mangoes thrive in fertile, well-draining soil. Prepare a nutrient-rich growing medium by mixing regular garden soil with organic compost and natural manure. Organic materials such as cow dung, sheep manure, homemade compost, curd and vegetable waste can improve soil fertility and promote healthy root development. Aim for an even mix of soil and organic matter.

 

3. Plant in a sunny location

Plant the sapling carefully, ensuring the roots have enough space to spread. Place the container or tree in a location that receives at least six to eight hours of direct sunlight every day. Good sunlight is essential for healthy growth, flowering, and fruit production.
 

4. Water regularly

Keep the soil consistently moist, but avoid waterlogging, which can damage the roots. Water the plant deeply during dry periods while ensuring excess water drains away easily.
 

5. Use organic pest control

Avoid chemical pesticides whenever possible. Natural solutions such as neem oil can help control common pests while maintaining healthy plant growth. Organic cultivation also supports better fruit quality.
