Whether you're shutting down a business, transferring ownership, or no longer required to pay GST, cancelling your GST registration is an important compliance step. The Government of India allows taxpayers to submit a GST registration cancellation request online through the GST portal, making the process quick and convenient. Here's a step-by-step guide to help you cancel your GST registration from the comfort of your home.

When Can You Cancel GST Registration?

  • Closure or discontinuation of business operations
  • No longer liable to pay GST
  • Change in the constitution of the business resulting in a new PAN
  • Transfer of business due to merger, amalgamation, demerger, sale, lease, or other arrangements
  • Death of a sole proprietor
  • Any other situation where GST registration is no longer required

Steps to follow:

  • Go to the GST website.
  • Enter your user ID and password to access the GST online portal.
  • Select the Services > Registration > Application for Registration Cancellation option.
  • After choosing the Basic Details tab in the form, manually enter your address for future correspondence. If applicable, you can also copy the same address from the Principal Place of Business field.
  • Click "Save & Continue."
  • Choose one of the five GST cancellation reasons.
  • You can manually enter your reason by tapping on Others if it doesn't fit one of the pre-set options.
  • Follow the on-screen instructions.
  • Click on the Save & Continue button.
  • Check the verification statement box to declare that what is given in the form is correct as per your knowledge.
  • Choose the authorized signatory's name from the Name of Authorized Signatory drop-down menu, then enter the name of the location where the declaration was made.
  • Sign the document using the EVC option or a Digital Signature Certificate (DSC).
  • You will receive an OTP at your registered phone number; enter it.
  • To keep track of your application, go to Services > Registration > Track Application Status.
