Losing your credit or debit card can be stressful, especially because of the risk of unauthorised transactions. Acting quickly can help protect your money and personal information. Most banks in India offer multiple ways to block a card, including mobile banking apps, internet banking, SMS and customer support services.

Why you should block your card immediately

If your card falls into the wrong hands, it could be used for:

  • Unauthorised online purchases
  • ATM cash withdrawals (if the PIN is compromised)
  • Fraudulent transactions using card details such as the card number and CVV
  • Activities that could potentially be linked to your name

Blocking the card as soon as possible reduces these risks and helps safeguard your finances.

Block your card using a mobile banking app

One of the quickest ways to block a lost card is through your bank's mobile banking app.

  • Open your bank's mobile banking app and log in.
  • Navigate to the Cards section, where all your debit and credit cards will be listed.
  • Select the debit or credit card you want to block after verifying the last four digits.
  • Locate and tap the Support or Manage option.
  • You should see options such as "Raise Dispute", "Permanent Block and Reissue" and "Disable Card". (These options may vary depending on the app.)
  • Choose "Permanent Block and Reissue" if your card has been lost.
  • Confirm your choice when prompted.
  • Follow the on-screen instructions to permanently block the card.
  • Your bank will send a confirmation through SMS or email once the card has been blocked.

Block your card through internet banking

If you do not have access to the mobile app, you can also block your card through internet banking.

  • Visit your bank's internet banking website.
  • Enter your login credentials and sign in.
  • Go to the Cards section and select the credit or debit card you want to block.
  • Under the Manage Cards or Support option, choose Permanent Block.
  • If prompted, select the reason for blocking the card.
  • Review the details and confirm your request.
  • Select either "Block Card" or "Permanent Block", depending on the options available.
  • Wait for a confirmation message from your bank.

Block your card via SMS

Many banks also allow customers to block lost cards by sending an SMS.

  • Open the Messages app on your smartphone.
  • Create a new message.
  • Enter the last four digits of your credit or debit card in the format specified by your bank.
  • Send the message to the toll-free number provided by your bank.
  • You should receive a confirmation message shortly informing you that your debit or credit card has been permanently blocked.
