Aadhaar is a 12-digit unique identification number issued by the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI). It is essential for availing various government and non-government services in India. The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has emphasised the importance of updating a child’s Aadhaar biometrics once the child turns seven years old. As per the existing Aadhaar guidelines, this Mandatory Biometric Update (MBU) is essential to ensure the Aadhaar data remains accurate and valid as the child grows.

Collect the required documents

To begin the application process, ensure you have the following documents ready:

  • Proof of identity for the child: Birth certificate or a school certificate.
  • Proof of identity of a parent/guardian: Aadhaar card or any valid government ID such as a PAN card, passport, or driving license.
  • Proof of Address: Documents such as an electricity bill, water bill, telephone bill, or any official government-issued address proof in the name of the parent/guardian.
  • Photo: Passport-sized photograph of the child.

Locate the nearest Aadhaar enrolment centre

Once the documents are ready, locate the nearest Aadhaar enrolment centre:

  • Visit the official UIDAI website: https://uidai.gov.in
  • Click on “Locate an Enrolment Centre”
  • Enter your state and city details
  • A list of nearby enrolment centres will be displayed with their address and contact information.

Visit the enrolment centre

Visit the selected enrolment centre along with the child and the necessary documents. You will be asked to fill out an enrolment form with the child’s personal details such as:

  • Full name
  • Date of birth
  • Residential address

Data Collection and Consent

After submitting the form:

  • A photograph of the child will be taken.
  • Biometric data (fingerprints and iris scans) are not collected for children under 5 years of age.
  • Once the child turns 5, biometrics must be updated.
  • A parent or guardian must provide consent and authenticate the enrolment by signing the form.
  • For NRIs: A valid Indian passport of the child is mandatory as Proof of Identity.
  • For Indian residents: A birth certificate and the Aadhaar of the parent or guardian are sufficient.

Collect the acknowledgement slip

Once the data is submitted, you will receive an acknowledgement slip containing the Enrolment ID. This ID can be used to track the status of the Aadhaar application online.

Aadhaar card issuance

After successful enrolment, the Aadhaar card will be processed and delivered to the address mentioned in the application form. Typically, the Aadhaar card is issued within 90 days of the date of enrolment.
