A saree is a traditional and timeless garment widely worn in South Asia, particularly in countries like India, Sri Lanka, Nepal, and Bangladesh. This elegant attire consists of a long, unstitched piece of fabric, typically 5 to 9 yards in length, draped gracefully around the body in various styles. The saree not only represents the rich cultural heritage of the region but also embodies sophistication and beauty.
Draping a saree can initially seem tricky, but with a little practice, anyone can master this graceful art. Follow this detailed step-by-step guide to drape a saree with elegance.
What you'll need:
- A saree (6-9 yards of fabric)
- A matching blouse
- A petticoat (underskirt) with a drawstring
- Safety pins (optional, for secure draping)
Preparation
- Start by wearing the blouse and petticoat. Tie the petticoat securely at your waist.
- Take the plain, unembroidered end of the saree and tuck it into the petticoat, slightly to the right of your navel.
Creating the base tuck
- Begin wrapping the saree around your waist from right to left.
- After completing one full turn, tuck the fabric neatly into the petticoat.
Pleating the front
- Take about 5-7 inches of fabric from the saree and begin making pleats, each about 4-5 inches wide.
- Ensure the pleats are aligned evenly and stacked one on top of the other.
- Once you’ve made about 5-7 pleats, gather them together and tuck them into the petticoat at the center of your waist, just below the navel. You may use a safety pin to secure the pleats in place.
Draping the pallu
- With the remaining saree fabric, bring it around your waist and pass it over to your left side.
- Drape the fabric over your left shoulder. The length of the pallu (loose end) should ideally reach your knees, or you can adjust it based on your preference.
- Pin the pallu to your blouse at the shoulder for added security.
Adjusting the drapes
- Make sure the saree is snug at the waist and adjust the pleats to ensure they are neatly arranged.
- If your saree has a border, ensure it is visible and lies flat without any folds.
With these simple steps, you can drape your saree beautifully and confidently. Remember, practice makes perfect, and soon you’ll be able to master this elegant and timeless art!
