Many people have experienced the condition of leg numbness or cramping, especially at night.

Why does this happen?

Just as pure blood flows through the arteries to different parts of the body, impure blood is pumped back to the heart through the veins. The valves within the veins regulate the blood flow in only one direction. Due to prolonged standing or similar activities, these valves can get gradually weakened, causing the blood to flow backward. As a result, increased pressure is experienced in the legs, leading to a condition known as venous insufficiency or venous incompetence.

How to overcome leg numbness?

This condition is more common among people with jobs that involve standing for long periods (e.g., traffic police, nurses, teachers). Those in such professions can reduce leg numbness by regularly wearing compression stockings, which help regulate pressure in the legs.

Alternatively, a crepe bandage can be used instead of stockings. Both can adjust the pressure gradient, but stockings are easier to use. These should be worn during the day. At night, it is helpful to elevate the legs while sleeping. Using pillows under the legs may not be practical, as it can be uncomfortable when turning or shifting during sleep. Instead, it is best to use a leg support to elevate the legs.

Proper workouts for the legs are also crucial. One such exercise is the Buerger's exercise. To do this, elevate the legs with two or three pillows so that they are above the level of the heart and rest for 5 minutes. This will cause the legs to turn pale and improve blood flow. Afterward, keep the legs elevated for another 2-3 minutes. During this time, move the feet up and down to further improve circulation. Then, lie flat without any pillows for another 3 minutes and continue moving the feet for comfort.

Those suffering from this condition should make sure to drink plenty of water. It's advisable to reduce water intake at night and focus on drinking water during the day. Ensure that the body does not become dehydrated. A deficiency of magnesium in the body can also contribute to this condition. Therefore, include magnesium-rich foods like leafy greens, fish such as sardines, and nuts in your diet.

By paying attention to these factors, leg numbness can be managed to a certain extent, allowing you to lead a more comfortable life.
