Sleeping on your stomach, though it might feel cozy, can bend the neck awkwardly

New Delhi: We all know that sleep is essential for health, but did you know your sleeping position might be silently damaging your body every night? Whether you doze on your back, curl up on your side, or sprawl on your stomach, each position can have surprising effects—both good and bad—on your health.
Sleeping on your side:
- By far the most popular—and generally healthiest—way to sleep. Here’s why:
- Soothes back pain: Helps keep the spine aligned, easing pressure on the lower back.
- Stops snoring: Keeps the airway open, making it ideal for those with sleep apnea.
- Best for moms-to-be: Doctors recommend the left side for pregnant women, as it improves blood flow and nutrient delivery to the baby.
- Boosts digestion: Sleeping on the left side can help reduce acid reflux, but beware! This position can also cause:
- Shoulder and hip pain can occur if you stay on one side too long.
- Wrinkles from constant pressure on one side of the face.
Sleeping on your back:
- For some, it’s the most natural position. The perks:
- Keeps the spine in a neutral, healthy position.
- Prevents facial wrinkles, since the face doesn’t touch the pillow.
- Helps reduce acid reflux, especially if the head is slightly elevated.
Yet, danger lurks:
- This position can worsen snoring and sleep apnea by letting the tongue fall back and block the airway.
- Not recommended for pregnant women, as it may reduce blood flow.
- Sleeping on your stomach:
- Though it might feel cozy, experts warn against it:
- Bends the neck awkwardly, leading to pain.
- Flattens the natural curve of the spine, increasing back problems.
- Presses the face into the pillow, causing wrinkles and breakouts.
So, what should you do?
Experts say the safest bet is to sleep on your side—especially your left side—for better digestion, less snoring, and healthier pregnancy outcomes. If you must sleep on your back, elevate your head slightly to fight acidity. But sleeping on your stomach? Best to break the habit before it breaks your health!
