Kulfi

The rankings, compiled by food and travel guide TasteAtlas, feature desserts from countries known for their rich culinary traditions, including Italy, Turkey, the United Kingdom, the United States and Japan.

While Italian gelatos dominate much of the list, India's classic milk-based dessert has carved out a place among the very best.

Kulfi secured the seventh spot with a rating of 4.3, standing shoulder to shoulder with internationally renowned frozen desserts.

Unlike conventional ice cream, kulfi is prepared by slowly simmering milk until it becomes thick, rich and naturally creamy. The concentrated mixture is then flavoured with ingredients such as saffron, pistachios, almonds, cardamom or rose before being frozen, creating its signature dense texture.

Its appeal lies in its simplicity. There is no need for elaborate techniques or excessive ingredients, just slow cooking and bold flavours that have been part of Indian kitchens for generations.

Kulfi Falooda

Also making the list was kulfi falooda, which ranked 33rd with a rating of 4.0.

More than a frozen sweet, kulfi falooda is a complete dessert experience. It combines slices of kulfi with silky falooda sev, soaked basil seeds, rose syrup and chilled milk, creating a refreshing mix of creamy, floral and chewy textures.

A staple at dessert parlours across India, the indulgent treat continues to be one of the country's most recognisable summer favourites.

The world's favourite frozen desserts

According to TasteAtlas, these are the five highest-ranked frozen desserts in the world:

  1. Clotted Cream Ice Cream (United Kingdom)
  2. Gelato al Pistacchio (Italy)
  3. Dondurma (Turkey)
  4. Frozen Custard (United States)
  5. Cremolada (Peru)

While the list showcases frozen desserts from across continents, India's double appearance is a reminder that traditional regional recipes continue to resonate with dessert lovers worldwide.

Long before artisanal gelatos and gourmet ice creams became trends, kulfi had already perfected the art of turning milk, nuts and aromatic spices into a timeless summer indulgence.
