A long car ride, flight or boat trip can become unpleasant when motion sickness strikes. The condition can cause dizziness, sweating, headache, fatigue, nausea and, in more severe cases, vomiting.

While it is difficult to prevent motion sickness completely, a few simple steps can help reduce the chances of feeling sick.

Why does motion sickness happen?

There isn't one explanation for motion sickness, but researchers believe it is linked to conflicting signals between the senses.

For example, when you read in a moving car, your eyes see a stationary page while your inner ear senses acceleration and movement. That mismatch can confuse the brain and trigger symptoms.

Almost anyone can experience motion sickness during intense movement, but some people are more sensitive than others.

Children tend to be particularly susceptible, while women are generally at greater risk than men. Genetics may also play a role in determining how easily someone develops motion sickness.

People who experience migraines, especially vestibular migraines associated with dizziness or vertigo, may also be more prone to motion-related symptoms.

How can you prevent motion sickness?

  • Take medication before the journey

Over-the-counter antihistamines such as Dramamine and Bonine can help prevent motion sickness, but experts recommend taking them before movement begins, than waiting until nausea becomes severe. The downside is that they can cause drowsiness and other side effects.

Scopolamine, available as a prescription patch placed behind the ear, is another option for some people. It can cause side effects such as dry mouth and isn't generally recommended for children or older adults.

  • Choose your seat carefully

Where you sit can make a surprising difference.

In a car, driving may help because you can anticipate turns and control the movement around you.

If you're a passenger, sitting closer to the centre of the vehicle and looking at the road may reduce symptoms.

On planes, choosing a seat around the centre of the aircraft can help minimise movement.

On boats, staying above deck and looking toward the horizon may make it easier for your brain to reconcile what your eyes and inner ear are sensing.

  • Avoid activities that worsen the mismatch

Reading or staring at a phone while travelling can make symptoms worse.

Instead, try looking outside at distant objects. Fresh air, relaxing music and controlled breathing may also make symptoms easier to manage.

Some people find pleasant scents such as lemon or rose helpful, although these approaches aren't guaranteed to work for everyone.

What about ginger, bracelets and motion-sickness glasses?

There are plenty of products marketed as quick fixes for motion sickness, but experts say the evidence isn't strong for all of them.

Research on ginger and other supplements has produced mixed results.

Acupressure wristbands and specialised motion-sickness glasses have also been studied, but most research suggests they perform little better than a placebo.

That doesn't necessarily mean someone won't feel better while using them. However, their perceived benefit may not come from a proven medical effect.

Can you train yourself not to get motion sick?

For people whose motion sickness regularly interferes with travel or daily activities, vestibular rehabilitation or specialised physical therapy may offer a longer-term solution.

A therapist can help identify the movements that trigger symptoms and gradually expose a person to them in a controlled way. This process, known as habituation, can help the brain become more accustomed to certain types of movement.

It isn't an instant fix and can be uncomfortable during the process, but experts say it can be highly effective for some people.
