Kozhikode: M. B. Rajesh, the Minister of Excise, officially conferred the title 'City of Literature' to Kozhikode on Sunday. This recognition was in acknowledgement of the honour bestowed upon the city by UNESCO on October 31, 2023.
The city has transformed into a hub for literary and cultural events, earning recognition from UNESCO as the first ‘City of Literature’ in India. Rajesh made the announcement during a ceremony held at the Kandamkulam Muhammad Abdu Rahman Memorial Jubilee Hall in Tali. Several literary luminaries and other eminent personalities attended the event.
The Kozhikode Corporation had begun preparations for the city of literature from December 2021 onward. Several discussions were held with representatives from cities of literary prominence like Prague and Edinburgh. The preparations were made after conducting studies on why Kozhikode deserves this status.
The diverse array of literary and cultural events, vibrant debates, numerous libraries, reading spaces, active engagement in theatre, and other cultural activities, combined with the contributions of writers, publishers, and media towards literary development, were instrumental in Kozhikode earning the esteemed title of ‘city of literature’.
Now designated as a ‘city of literature’, Kozhikode will have opportunities to engage in dialogues with other cities in literary circles, promote literary tourism, invite writers to participate in events, and foster literary and cultural exchanges. Institutions such as KILA (Kerala Institute of Local Administration), NIT Calicut, and various other organizations have played significant roles in supporting Kozhikode in achieving this prestigious recognition.
