Kozhikode: Kozhikode has proudly achieved the distinction of becoming India's first UNESCO City of Literature. On Sunday, Mayor Beena Philip expressed her joy over this achievement, highlighting Kozhikode's unique spirit that fosters unity among its people.

“We are thrilled that Kozhikode has been recognized as India's first City of Literature. This accolade is not just a victory for the corporation, but for everyone who contributed," the mayor said.

Known for its abundant readership, libraries, and museums, Kozhikode has long attracted writers who have made it their home. The ongoing ‘literary city’ initiative has played a pivotal role in this recognition.

"This is just the beginning. All literary events in Kozhikode will now be under this prestigious brand. The website will showcase these activities, fostering an environment where artists can receive more support," the mayor added.

Plans include placing informational boards at writers' residences and organising writing workshops to nurture local literary talent. The city aims to attract international collaborations, tapping into creative economies and governance.

Designated on October 31, Kozhikode's UNESCO City of Literature status requires ongoing commitment to cultural activities. Regular inspections will ensure the city maintains this esteemed title, prompting collective efforts towards sustaining its literary vibrancy.
