Kochi: A surge in demand for pineapple has resulted in an increase in its price in the retail markets across Kerala. Major outlets are selling the ripe fruit at Rs 53 per kilogram. Raw pineapple has been trading at Rs 40 per kilogram while special-grade raw pineapple is at Rs 42 per kilogram.

Interestingly, the price of ripe fruit in January was at Rs 30 per kilogram.

According to players involved, the summer-Ramadan special demand is the reason behind the increase in price.

Usually, during the Vishu-Ramadan season, up to 2,000 tons of pineapple will be sold in and around the state. Kerala-produced pineapple has a market in places like Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Maharashtra and Ahmedabad.
