Ernakulam: The pandemic, cyclone and climate change had badly hit the pineapple market in the state. Pineapple farmers are in distress as the price fall of the fruit devastated their dreams.

It is learned that vendors are not ready to purchase pineapple from the farmers. Hence, the farmers have no idea about what to do with the crop which is ready to harvest. Closure of shops and failure to export pineapple to other states amid the lockdown led to the price fall of the fruit.

It is reported that the interruption of goods transport also affected sale. The farmers have urged for immediate action from the government to solve the crisis.

Though Horticorp informed that they will directly procure pineapple from the farmers, it didn’t turn successful. Horticop lacks the facility to procure a huge load of pineapple. 

Hence, tonnes of pineapple is getting rotten in the gardens.

Most of the farmers started pineapple farming by taking land on lease and investing a huge amount. The price fall triggered another issue for the farmers when they are struggling to meet the expenditure on farming.
