Notices are being issued in rolling phases, with affected staff in regions like the U.S. and U.K. instructed to work remotely.

Meta Platforms Inc. has initiated its latest wave of corporate downsizing, a restructuring effort set to eliminate approximately 10 per cent of its global workforce, or roughly 8,000 positions. The company has begun distributing notices to affected staff members, with personnel at its Singapore hub being the first to receive the termination announcements.
According to a report by Bloomberg, Meta dispatched electronic notices to affected employees in Singapore at 4 a.m. local time (1:30 a.m. IST). The operational reductions coincide with significant capital deployment strategies orchestrated by Chief Executive Mark Zuckerberg, who intends to invest billions of dollars into artificial intelligence initiatives this year.
Prior to the implementation of the job cuts and internal reassignments, the social media giant maintained a global workforce of approximately 78,000 personnel.
The strategy mirrors recent contraction trends across the technology sector. Oracle Corp., another major industry entity, recently dissolved roughly 30,000 positions globally by issuing early morning electronic correspondence to targeted staff members at 6 a.m.
Remote Work Directives and Restructuring Mandates
Internal corporate communications indicate that Meta will distribute termination notices in rolling phases customised to specific regional time zones. Management instructed personnel in the United States, Great Britain, and additional designated territories to perform their duties from home today.
In an internal memorandum, Meta Chief People Officer Janelle Gale disclosed that alongside the 8,000 redundancies, the corporation will reassign approximately 7,000 workers into newly established, AI-focused divisions. Gale further indicated that the enterprise plans to reduce managerial tiers to foster the development of more compact operational units.
The current workforce reduction is projected to disproportionately impact engineering and product development departments, and corporate analysts suggest that supplementary layoffs may occur later this calendar year.
As part of the organisational realignment, Meta has additionally cancelled approximately 6,000 open job requisitions.
"We're now at the stage where many orgs can operate with a flatter structure with smaller teams of pods/cohorts that can move faster and with more ownership. We believe this will make us more productive and make the work more rewarding," Gale stated in the memorandum.
Workplace Dissension and Surveillance Tactics
Meta executives initially confirmed the 8,000 job reductions last month following media leaks. The premature disclosures reportedly fostered widespread professional anxiety and reduced internal morale to historic lows. Some staff members reportedly responded to the impending announcement by accumulating complimentary office snacks and peripheral hardware chargers ahead of the formal May 20 declarations.
Simultaneously, reports have surfaced indicating that Meta has deployed monitoring software engineered to record the keystrokes and mouse movements of employees to compile data for artificial intelligence training models. The surveillance measure provoked significant internal resistance, culminating in more than 1,000 employees signing a formal petition demanding the immediate cessation of the tracking protocols.
Zuckerberg has increasingly prioritised artificial intelligence development as Meta attempts to match the technological advancements of competitors such as Alphabet Inc.’s Google and OpenAI. Corporate financial disclosures from last month revealed that Meta projects capital expenditures between $125 billion and $145 billion this year, with the vast majority of those resources allocated toward AI infrastructure.
The structural transformations at Meta occur amid a broader contraction across the technology landscape as firms adjust their corporate focuses toward automated technologies. Cisco Systems Inc. announced last week that it would eliminate 4,000 roles, while Microsoft Corp., Amazon.com Inc., and alternative industry leaders have similarly announced redundancy programs or structured voluntary departure packages in recent weeks.
