Agniveers under Agnipath scheme to receive career support through Army–Railways pact.

New Delhi: The Indian Army and Indian Railways have launched a “Framework of Cooperation” aimed at expanding post-retirement employment opportunities for Agniveers and other Army personnel, marking a significant step in inter-ministerial coordination.
Guided by senior officials from the Indian Army and the Ministry of Railways, the initiative seeks to create structured pathways for retiring soldiers to transition into civilian careers within Indian Railways, one of the country’s largest public sector employers.
The framework focuses on raising awareness about job opportunities in Indian Railways, streamlining recruitment procedures for eligible ex-servicemen and Agniveers, and establishing dedicated support systems for personnel approaching the end of their military service.
The partnership reflects a joint commitment to providing meaningful second careers for former soldiers, enabling them to utilise their discipline, leadership skills and technical training in roles that contribute to national development.

Agniveers recruited under the Agnipath scheme serve a four-year term, after which only a limited percentage are retained in the armed forces. Many face uncertainty in securing stable employment post-service. The new cooperation between the Indian Army and Indian Railways aims to bridge this gap by facilitating their absorption into suitable civilian roles.
Indian Railways offers employment across diverse sectors, including security through the Railway Protection Force (RPF), operations, maintenance, logistics and administrative services. These roles are considered well-aligned with the skills and resilience developed during military training.
The collaboration is expected to provide preferential consideration, skill-matching initiatives and targeted vacancy notifications for Agniveers and ex-servicemen. It builds on existing provisions such as reservations and age relaxations in central government jobs, including railway and paramilitary services.
Announced through the Indian Army’s Additional Directorate General of Public Information, the move forms part of broader government efforts to support Agniveers beyond their short-term military engagement.
The initiative also complements ongoing post-service welfare measures, including skill development programmes, financial counselling and job placement assistance. With many Agniveers completing service in their early to mid-20s, the framework is designed to ensure continued participation in the civilian workforce and long-term economic stability.
Officials said the collaboration could benefit thousands of retiring personnel annually, strengthen morale within the armed forces and reinforce the long-term value of military service in India.
Further operational details, including specific quotas, training modules and implementation timelines, are expected to be finalised jointly by the Ministry of Railways and the Indian Army in the coming months.
