WhatsApp is set to enforce a major policy change from 15 January 2026, restricting all third-party AI chatbots from the platform and allowing only Meta’s own AI assistant to operate. The move is part of Meta’s effort to maintain control over AI services within its messaging ecosystem.

OpenAI and Microsoft have already confirmed they will discontinue their ChatGPT and Copilot integrations on WhatsApp. Users of ChatGPT can link their accounts to retain chat history before the shutdown, while Microsoft has stated that Copilot users will not be able to carry forward conversations.

Meta has clarified that its Business API will continue to function, but only for essential updates or customer support, not as a channel for independent AI chatbots. A company spokesperson emphasised that the purpose of the API is to help businesses deliver critical information and support services to users while ensuring a stable framework for communication tools.

The restriction is expected to affect other AI providers as well, including services like Perplexity, which may exit the platform. Once the policy is implemented, Meta’s in-house AI will be the sole chatbot available, marking a significant shift in how AI-assisted interactions occur on WhatsApp.

This change highlights the growing tension between platform control and third-party AI integration, as companies reassess how users access generative AI tools within widely used messaging services.
