Industry expert Jason Schreier explains Rockstar’s GTA 6 delay to May 2026 is meant to avoid rushed production

As Rockstar Games has officially confirmed that Grand Theft Auto VI (GTA 6) will not be released this year and is now scheduled to launch on May 26, 2026, many fans have expressed disappointment. Following the announcement, gaming journalist and industry expert Jason Schreier has shed light on the reason behind the delay.
His update comes after months of speculation surrounding the game’s release, and he suggests that Rockstar’s decision reflects the company’s focus on maintaining quality without compromising working conditions.
He revealed that many at Rockstar had already moved past the initial Fall 2025 release window, seeing it as unrealistic. “Nobody I’ve talked to at Rockstar has believed Fall 2025 was a real window for a very long time now. Too much work, not enough time, and what appears to be a real desire from management to avoid brutal crunch. GTA VI slipping to 2026 has seemed inevitable for months if not longer” Schreier wrote.

He added that the internal sentiment around a 2026 launch had existed for months, if not longer. The delay, in Schreier’s view, reflects a shift in Rockstar’s approach— putting game polish ahead of hurried timelines.
In a written message posted on its official channels, Rockstar apologised for the delay and addressed fan concerns directly. “We are very sorry that this is later than you expected. The interest and excitement surrounding a new Grand Theft Auto has been truly humbling for our entire team. We want to thank you for your support and your patience as we work to finish the game,” Rockstar stated.
