OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has triggered a social media debate after questioning why personal computer users keep large amounts of computer memory (RAM) that remain largely unused, arguing that the world's limited supply could be put to better use in AI data centres. Facing backlash over the remarks, Altman even changed his display name on X to “Ram Altman” after a user suggested it.

The unusual name change came as users criticised his comments that having dedicated Dynamic Random Access Memory (DRAM) in personal computers was a “quite terrible” allocation of the world's limited memory supply.

Altman made the remarks during an appearance on the Cheeky Pint podcast, where he discussed the computing resources required by the artificial intelligence industry.

“From a global allocation perspective, actually, it's quite terrible to have everybody have a bunch of the world's limited supply of DRAM sitting in their own computer and being used 5% of the time,” he said.

“You want maximum utilisation in the cloud if you're trying to deal with this very supply-constrained environment,” he added.

His comments drew criticism from computer users, with many questioning why consumers should have to limit the memory installed in their personal computers to meet the growing demands of AI companies.

Why did Sam Altman change his name to Ram Altman?

Amid the backlash, Altman defended his remarks in a post on X, saying people should always remain in control of the future and should not be relegated to roles determined by artificial intelligence systems.

Responding to one of his posts, a user asked: “Can you rename your X to Ram Altman?”

The OpenAI CEO replied, “Ok yeah,” and subsequently changed his display name.

In a follow-up comment, Altman said his earlier remarks had been taken out of context. He insisted that he wanted the world to have more memory and that consumers should be able to install as much RAM as they wanted in their computers.

“But only because, I actually do want the world to have tons of memory and people to put as much as they want in their computers, and it is f***ing annoying that this was taken out of context. I have been arguing for the world to ramp up memory production for a long time,” he wrote.

Why is RAM becoming important for AI companies?

DRAM is a key component in computers, temporarily storing data that processors need to access quickly. It is used in everything from personal computers and gaming systems to the servers powering artificial intelligence services.

AI companies require substantial amounts of memory to train and run increasingly sophisticated models. As investment in data centre infrastructure grows, demand for memory and other computing components has also increased.

Altman's comments have brought attention to the competing demands of individual computer users and large technology companies for the same limited computing resources.

While he argued that cloud infrastructure could make more efficient use of available memory, his remarks prompted questions about whether the expansion of AI infrastructure could come at the expense of consumer access to computer hardware.

Altman has since changed his X display name back from “Ram Altman” to “Sam Altman”.
