The troubled six-year development of Ubisoft's now-cancelled Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time remake has taken another embarrassing turn, with a gaming content creator alleging that the entire Nintendo Switch version was assigned to a single developer in India who had to halt work after contracting COVID-19.

YouTube personality Larry Bundy Jr, known as Guru Larry, made the claim on X (formerly Twitter) following Ubisoft's announcement on January 21, 2026, that it was cancelling the long-delayed remake as part of a sweeping corporate restructuring.

"The entire development of the game was utter clown shoes (show)… I'm friends with a few ex-Ubisoft staff; they gave the entire development of the Switch version to one single guy in India, and he had to stop as he caught Covid," Guru Larry wrote in his post.

A Six-Year Development Nightmare

The allegation emerged amid one of the most chaotic weeks in Ubisoft's history. The French gaming giant announced it was cancelling six games, closing two studios, delaying seven titles, and expecting a €1 billion operating loss this year. The company's shares plummeted by over 33% on January 22, its worst trading day on record.

The Sands of Time remake was first announced in September 2020 with a planned January 2021 release date. After fan backlash over the initial trailer's graphics, development was transferred from Ubisoft's Pune and Mumbai studios in India to Ubisoft Montreal in 2022. Despite multiple assurances that the project remained on track for 2026, Ubisoft confirmed its cancellation this week, stating the game "did not meet the new enhanced quality benchmarks."

"While the project had real potential, we weren't able to reach the level of quality you deserve," the official Prince of Persia account said on X.

Unverifiable but Plausible

Guru Larry's claims remain unverified and impossible to corroborate now that the project has been scrapped. However, several Ubisoft India Studios team members on LinkedIn have indicated they worked on the game in some capacity since 2018, according to Gaming Bible.

The allegations speak to broader concerns about resource allocation at Ubisoft during a period of financial instability. The company is now reorganising into five "Creative Houses" while pursuing what it calls "accelerated investments behind player-facing Generative AI", a strategy that has drawn criticism from developers and fans alike.

What Comes Next

Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot characterised the restructuring as a "major reset" necessary for the company's survival. "While these decisions are difficult, they are essential for us to establish a more focused, efficient, and sustainable organisation," Guillemot said.

For fans who waited six years for the Sands of Time remake, the cancellation, and the allegations of mismanagement surrounding it, serve as a bitter conclusion to one of gaming's most prolonged development sagas.
