Instagram has unveiled a new way for people to share everyday moments, launching Instants, a feature designed to deliver quick, unedited photos to a small circle of friends. Rolled out globally on 13 May, Instants appears both inside the main Instagram app and as a standalone companion app linked to a user’s account.

Marketed as a tool built with Gen Z behaviour in mind, Instants encourages spontaneous sharing without filters, stickers or editing tools. Each photo can be viewed only once by the recipient before disappearing, echoing the ephemeral style that first made Snapchat popular.

According to USA Today, Instagram’s vice-president of product, Tessa Lyons-Laing, said the feature reflects a shift toward authentic, low-effort posting among teens and young adults. According to the company, Gen Z users are significantly more likely to share to Close Friends rather than their main Stories.

Instagram says the goal is simple: remove the pressure of perfection and bring back the casual, real-time exchanges younger users increasingly prefer.

What exactly is Instants?

Instants is a lightweight photo-capturing mode created for moments that feel too ordinary for the feed or even Stories. The feature lets users send a single, unpolished snapshot straight to their Close Friends list or to mutual followers, people they follow who follow them back.

While Stories can be replayed within 24 hours, Instants restrict viewing to one look only. Once opened, the image disappears and cannot be revisited.

How the feature works

Accessing Instants is intentionally simple. Users open Instagram Direct and tap a small stack-of-photos icon in the bottom-right corner. This pulls up the Instants camera, where they can:

  • Choose an audience: Friends (mutual followers) or Close Friends
  • Add an optional caption
  • Snap a photo and send it instantly

Shared Instants appear in a special gallery accessible through the same photo stack inside Direct. Photos sent by others also appear there, giving the feature a dedicated space within the platform.

If a user changes their mind, an Undo option appears immediately after taking the photo. They can also revisit the Instants gallery later, press and hold an image and delete it before anyone opens it.

You can also Snooze Instants by holding down the stack of Instants near your inbox and swiping right to temporarily hide them. To bring them back, simply hold the same stack and swipe left again.

Built around single-view sharing

The defining element of Instants is its one-time viewing limit. Each photo remains accessible to recipients for up to 24 hours, but once someone opens it, the image disappears permanently from their inbox.

Users can also see who viewed their Instants, similar to the viewers list on Instagram Stories. This provides transparency without compromising the single-view format.

This approach differs from Stories, which stay visible for a full day and can be rewatched multiple times.

Turning Instants into Stories

Although Instants is designed for private sharing, users can group their own photos together and convert them into a Story recap. These recaps appear with a distinct film-reel style, making them easy to distinguish from regular Stories.

The recap feature gives people the flexibility to craft a broader narrative from otherwise fleeting snapshots.

Archive and recap tools for users

Even though friends can only view an Instant once, the sender retains access to their own photos for up to a year via a private archive. This archive allows users to:

  • Review all previously shared Instants
  • Compile multiple photos into a recap
  • Repost Instants to Stories at a later point

This structure blends ephemerality with personal record-keeping, useful for those who prefer documenting memories without keeping them public.

Safety and teen protections integrated

Instagram has woven its existing Teen Accounts and parental supervision tools into Instants. The feature:

  • Blocks screen recording to protect the privacy of shared photos
  • Applies time limits through Instagram’s daily screen-time settings
  • Disables access during Sleep Mode hours for supervised teens
  • Gives parents oversight if they already use Instagram’s monitoring tools

All content shared through Instants remains subject to Instagram’s platform rules and moderation systems.

Why Instagram built Instants

Instagram says Instants responds to a noticeable shift in how young people use the app. Features such as Notes, introduced in 2022, already show Gen Z’s preference for informal, low-pressure communication. According to the company, Gen Z users are:

  • Five times more likely than older groups to use Notes
  • 2.5 times more likely to share content with Close Friends instead of posting publicly

Instants aims to deepen this trend by offering a quick, authentic way to stay connected without the formality of the feed or the repeat visibility of Stories.

Do you need the standalone Instants app?

No. The feature is fully accessible inside Instagram. The standalone app simply gives Instagram more insight into how users interact with Instants, while offering an alternate entry point for people who want a separate space for casual sharing.
