Telecom users in India will soon benefit from a new feature that displays the caller’s name alongside the phone number, similar to popular apps like Truecaller. The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has instructed service providers to expedite the testing of this feature, known as Caller Name Presentation (CNAP), aimed at enhancing caller identification.

The first phase of CNAP testing has already been conducted in Haryana and Maharashtra, with telecom giants Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel leading the trial. Vodafone Idea (Vi) is expected to join shortly. The service will initially be available to 4G and 5G users. However, 2G network users will not have access to this feature due to the limitations of older technology.

CNAP’s goal: Enhancing security and reducing fraud

The CNAP system is designed to reduce cybercrimes by improving transparency in caller identification. By showing the caller’s name, users can better assess the legitimacy of incoming calls, thereby avoiding scams and fraud.

2G users excluded due to technology limitations

Due to outdated technology in 2G networks, these users will be excluded from the initial CNAP rollout. The feature will be made available to users on more modern networks, specifically 4G and 5G.

Nationwide availability in the near future

The government plans to implement CNAP in phases, with a nationwide rollout expected in the coming months. This feature is set to significantly improve mobile phone security for users across the country.
