X product head Nikita Bier warns of an unprecedented spam surge in calls, messages & email within 90 days, potentially rendering communication tools unusable. Learn more.

Unwanted calls and automated messages are already a daily irritation for most smartphone users, but a senior executive at X (formerly Twitter) believes this is only the beginning. Nikita Bier, product head at Elon Musk-owned social media platform X, has warned that core communication tools could soon be overwhelmed by automated spam to the point of being practically unusable.
Sharing his concerns on X, Bier said the next three months could see an unprecedented surge in spam across phone calls, messaging apps and email services. According to him, the scale of automation now becoming available could overwhelm existing safeguards on platforms long considered relatively secure.
In his post, Bier wrote, “Prediction: In less than 90 days, all channels that we thought were safe from spam & automation will be so flooded that they will no longer be usable in any functional sense: iMessage, phone calls, Gmail”.
He added that users may have very limited options to counter this flood, suggesting that current defences may struggle to keep pace with what is coming. He added, “And we will have no way to stop it”.
This warning has also prompted a natural question: how could everyday communication tools deteriorate so quickly? Spam calls, texts and emails have existed for years, and most major platforms already rely on filters and automated detection to limit their impact.
Addressing this scepticism, Bier responded to a user who commented, “This happened six months ago”, by explaining why he believes the situation is about to escalate.
Bier pointed to OpenClaw, an open-source platform that allows users to build their own on-device AI agents, arguing that it removes the technical complexity that previously restricted large-scale spam operations. Bier wrote, “Wait until every person who wants to make $50/day sets up OpenClaw. Before there was a technical barrier to this.”
Other users echoed his concerns by sharing their own experiences. One user remarked, “Good observation. Spam filter on Gmail is completely ineffective for me already. And so is iMessage.” In response, Bier suggested that traditional digital communication channels may soon become unusable, replying, “Going forward, the only way to communicate with me will be shouting in my face.”
Another user described the growing nuisance of unwanted calls, writing, “Already happening. The phone calls are driving me nuts.” Bier replied by placing the current situation into perspective, warning that what users are experiencing today is only a fraction of what could come. He responded, “What you’re experiencing now is 0.1% of the population being capable of this. Now imagine it being 100%.”
