Kozhikode: Technology IHub Foundation (IPTIF) of IIT Palakkad has submitted a proposal to the Government of Kerala to improve "security and quality of life of inmates with the help of Artificial Intelligence (AI)."

After frequent incidents of inmate absconding, the Government has recently decided to appoint 24 new security personnel at Kuthiravattam Mental Health Centre. In addition to this, the health department of the state has been considering employing modern technology to alleviate this problem. The recommendation of IIT Palakkad comes amidst this.

With the use of AI, in-time care and treatment can be provided to the patients by monitoring them and understanding their behavioural changes, IIT Palakkad said in a press release.

"IPTIF plans to create a holistic system to improve the quality of life of mental health patients. One of the crucial components of this system will be a patient monitoring system that enables doctors and hospital staff to monitor patients around the clock and receive alerts if they perform any suspicious activities," it read.

Harilal Bhaskar, the CEO of  IPTIF, said that counselling patients using VR headsets and using cameras to monitor facial micro-imaginings to predict their actions (jail-breaking, harassing other patients, etc.) would be a big stride in the domain of mental health.
