All AI creations will have watermarks for transparency. These features are initially rolling out in select countries

California: Google is dramatically enhancing its creative ecosystem, rolling out a suite of powerful new AI-driven tools for both Google Photos and YouTube Shorts. These innovations, largely powered by advanced models like Veo 2, aim to democratise dynamic content creation, allowing users to effortlessly transform static memories and fresh ideas into engaging visual stories.
Google Photos: Bringing stills to life and remixing memories
For Google Photos users, two exciting AI features are set to redefine how memories are shared:
Photo to Video: This intuitive tool breathes life into still images, converting them into dynamic, six-second video clips. Users can select a photo and choose between subtle, AI-generated movements or an "I'm feeling lucky" prompt for more creative animations. This functionality is driven by Google's cutting-edge Veo 2 model.
Remix: With "Remix," users can instantly transform their photos into various artistic styles, including vibrant anime, classic comics, detailed sketches, or even engaging 3D animations. Simply pick a photo and apply the desired artistic treatment.
To streamline access to these and other creative functionalities (like collages and highlight videos), Google Photos is introducing a new, centralised "Create" tab within the app. The "Photo to Video" and "Remix" features are currently rolling out to Android and iOS users in the U.S., with the "Create" tab expected to follow in August.
YouTube Shorts: Turbocharging short-form video production
YouTube Shorts creators are also gaining formidable new AI capabilities designed to make short-form video production more dynamic and intuitive:
Image-to-Video Feature: Similar to its Google Photos counterpart, this tool allows Shorts creators to transform photos from their camera roll into animated six-second videos, also leveraging Google's Veo 2 model. Users can select creative suggestions like "Subtle movements" or "I'm feeling lucky."
New AI Effects: Accessible via the "Effects" icon in the Shorts camera under a dedicated "AI" tab, these effects offer a range of creative possibilities. Examples include turning simple doodles into artistic visuals, transforming selfies into immersive underwater scenes, and generating "twinning" videos with lookalike characters.
AI Playground: To further empower creators, YouTube is launching "AI Playground," a new hub within the Shorts creation interface. This centralised platform will offer pre-filled prompts, inspirational examples, and easy access to all the generative AI tools, making it more intuitive for creators to experiment and produce compelling short-form content.
The initial rollout for YouTube Shorts' image-to-video feature, new AI effects, and the AI Playground is currently underway in the US, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand, with plans for expansion to more regions soon.
Responsible AI and transparency
Google underscores its unwavering commitment to responsible AI development across all these new tools. To ensure transparency, all AI-generated videos and photos produced by both Google Photos and YouTube Shorts will be clearly labelled with SynthID digital watermarks. Additionally, generated videos will feature a visual watermark. The company states it has conducted extensive "red teaming" exercises and thorough evaluations to prevent misuse. Google also notes that these features are experimental, and outputs may occasionally be unexpected or inaccurate, actively encouraging users to provide feedback to aid in continuous improvement.
