Low risk since Google avoids mainland market retaliation, as it doesn't officially sell Pixels in China.

Google has reportedly instructed suppliers of its intention to halt all hardware manufacturing in China by 2027, transferring the production of its complete Pixel ecosystem—encompassing smartphones, smartwatches, and wireless earbuds—to Vietnam and India. According to an August 2026 report by Nikkei Asia, the tech giant is accelerating efforts to insulate its hardware supply chain against persistent Washington-Beijing geopolitical tensions and potential tariff disruptions.
The strategic pivot follows a successful manufacturing initiative in Vietnam, where Google developed and assembled its flagship Pixel 11 series after investing in specialised testing equipment and tooling machinery. As noted by Engadget, mastering complex smartphone production in Vietnam provided Google with the operational confidence to shift simpler peripheral hardware out of China. Concurrently, India is set to absorb a substantial share of device assembly as Google capitalises on expanding local partnerships and domestic manufacturing incentives.
Crucially, Google faces fewer operational obstacles in departing China than rival tech giants. A primary advantage is that Google does not officially sell Pixel hardware in mainland China, shielding the firm from local market retaliation. Moreover, Google’s hardware scale remains far smaller than Apple’s, allowing the company to nimbly tap into South-East Asian supply chains already established by Samsung rather than building new facilities from the ground up.
The manufacturing relocation aligns with an aggressive commercial push for hardware expansion. According to reports, Google shipped approximately 12 million smartphones in 2025 and has instructed suppliers to target an 8 to 10 per cent increase in 2026, aiming for roughly 13 million units. This volume push is closely tied to Google’s broader software strategy, positioning Pixel hardware as the primary conduit for introducing its integrated Gemini artificial intelligence ecosystem to international consumers. If completed on schedule by 2027, Google will become only the second major global smartphone manufacturer, after Samsung, to completely eliminate Chinese manufacturing from its mobile supply chain.
