Apple is preparing to take the wraps off its next generation of iPhones on September 9 at its ‘Awe Dropping’ launch event, and this year’s line-up is shaping up to be one of its most diverse yet. Among the four models - iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Pro, iPhone 17 Pro Max and the all-new iPhone 17 Air - two stand out for very different reasons. The Pro Max promises raw power and premium features, while the Air aims to be Apple’s lightest, slimmest smartphone to date.

Design and build

The iPhone 17 Air is tipped to be Apple’s first ultra-thin iPhone, reportedly measuring just 5.5 millimetres thick and weighing around 145 grams. It is expected to use a titanium-aluminium hybrid frame and carry a single rear camera, favouring sleekness over multiple lenses. Leaked colour options include light blue, light gold, black and white.

By contrast, the iPhone 17 Pro Max is expected to bring a noticeable redesign. Rumours point to a larger rectangular camera housing, an aluminium frame, and a bulkier profile to accommodate a bigger battery and a vapour-chamber cooling system. Colour options could include black, white, grey, dark blue and a copper-orange finish.

Displays and performance

Leaks suggest the iPhone 17 Air will sport a 6.6-inch LTPO OLED display with Apple’s 120Hz ProMotion refresh rate and peak brightness of up to 2,000 nits. Always-on functionality remains uncertain, as ultra-low 1Hz refresh may not make the cut for this model.

The iPhone 17 Pro Max, meanwhile, is likely to feature a 6.9-inch OLED panel with adaptive refresh and the same ProMotion technology. Both devices are expected to run on Apple’s upcoming A19 Pro chip paired with 12GB of RAM, though the standard iPhone 17 models will reportedly stick with 8GB. The Air may also integrate Apple’s in-house C1 modem for improved 5G connectivity.

Cameras

Apple appears to be taking very different approaches to photography on these two phones. The iPhone 17 Air is said to include a single 48-megapixel rear camera to keep the design thin, along with a 24-megapixel front-facing camera aimed at sharper selfies.

On the other hand, the iPhone 17 Pro Max is rumoured to house a triple-lens 48-megapixel system, with a main, ultra-wide, and periscope telephoto sensor capable of 5x optical zoom. Improvements in low-light performance and a 24-megapixel front camera are also on the cards, with Apple aiming to outpace its rivals in photo and video quality.

Battery and hardware differences

The Air’s ultra-slim profile comes with trade-offs: reports point to a compact 2,800 to 2,900mAh high-density battery, likely to require MagSafe battery packs for heavy users. The Pro Max, however, is expected to pack Apple’s largest battery yet, around 5,000mAh, alongside a vapour-chamber cooling system designed to keep temperatures in check during gaming or extended video recording.

Memory upgrades further separate the models. The Pro Max is tipped to ship with 12GB RAM and higher base storage, while the standard iPhone 17 will stay at 8GB RAM and around 3,600mAh capacity.

Price expectations

In India, the iPhone 17 Air is expected to start at about ₹89,990 (around $1,099 in the US), positioning it between the base model and the Pro versions. The Pro Max could start at roughly ₹1,64,990, likely with 256GB as the entry-level storage option.

Market outlook

Industry analysts say Apple is broadening its appeal by pushing two extremes at once: a feather-light, design-driven model for users who prioritise portability, and a high-end powerhouse aimed at gamers, content creators and heavy multitaskers. Supply-chain sources cited by Reuters indicate strong early demand for the Pro Max in particular, suggesting Apple’s bet on performance-driven users may pay off.
