Leaked iPhone 17 Pro Max features point to 8X optical zoom, vapour chamber cooling, and a return to an aluminium frame
With Apple’s much-anticipated annual event just hours away, fresh iPhone 17 Pro Max leaks are pointing to radical upgrades in camera and cooling technology. The launch event begins on September 9 at 10:30 pm IST.
According to a report by 9to5Mac, citing tipster @Jukanlosreve’s now-deleted post on X and carrier documents from South Korea, the iPhone 17 Pro models — including the iPhone 17 Pro Max — are expected to feature a telephoto lens capable of up to 8X optical zoom. This would be a major iPhone 17 Pro feature, significantly improving on the 5X zoom currently offered on the iPhone 16 Pro series.

Pro-level cooling system
As per the leaks, the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max details reveal the debut of a vapour chamber cooling system, a technology commonly used in gaming devices to disperse heat away from the CPU and GPU. This technology, typically used in high-performance laptops and gaming devices, helps disperse heat away from critical components like the CPU and GPU using a vacuum-sealed liquid spreader.
If accurate, this would mark the second consecutive year Apple has revamped thermal management. The iPhone 16 Pro introduced a graphene thermal system in 2024, designed to mitigate overheating issues noted in the iPhone 15 Pro. With vapour chamber cooling, users could see extended performance during heavy workloads.
Design shift back to Aluminium
Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman also reported that Apple is preparing to ditch the titanium frame introduced with the iPhone 15 Pro, opting instead for a return to aluminium in the iPhone 17 Pro series. Aluminium is not only lighter but also more effective at dissipating heat, potentially making the devices more comfortable to hold during intensive use.
The change is particularly relevant as the iPhone 17 Pro Max is expected to house a larger battery this year. By balancing a lighter frame with bigger battery capacity, Apple could ensure performance stability without compromising usability.
If the leaks hold true, the iPhone 17 Pro would represent a step forward both in optical imaging technology and thermal efficiency. For professional users, the combination of 8X optical zoom and vapour chamber cooling could enable new possibilities, including extended 8K video recording and smoother high-end gaming sessions.
