New Delhi: The Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports has officially cleared a 768-member Indian delegation for the 20th Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan, scheduled from 19 September to 4 October 2026. The approved contingent comprises 503 athletes, 269 men and 234 women, competing across 36 sports disciplines. Accompanied by 246 support staff and 19 official personnel under Chef de Mission Sahdev Yadav, the delegation would be an administrative push to expand India’s multi-sport footprint.

Surfing Debut and Key Discipline Additions

The final squad roster marks an increase from an initial approved draft of 492 athletes across 35 sports. The inclusion of surfing as the 36th sport brought four athletes, Kishore Kumar Anbarashu, Sivaraj Babu, Kamali Moorthy, and Sugar Banarse, marking India’s continental debut in shortboard surfing. Late squad adjustments also added six athletes to track and field alongside one competitor in mixed martial arts to maximise medal potential across disciplines.

Athletics Leads Squad Numbers Amid Injuries

Track and field remains India’s largest single discipline, featuring 79 athletes supported by a 31-member coaching and medical team led by national coach P Radhakrishnan. The athletics team faces a tactical test following the absence of star javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra, who was ruled out due to a severe ligament tear. Nonetheless, experienced competitors including steeplechaser Avinash Sable, shot-putter Tajinderpal Singh Toor, and sprinter Kiran Pahal anchor a competitive unit.

Strong Support Staff and Star Contenders

Across other primary sports, Indian squads arrive backed by high-profile leadership and proven international talent. The 30-member cricket contingent will operate under men’s director VVS Laxman and women’s head coach Amol Muzumdar as both teams aim to defend their gold medals. Meanwhile, two-time Olympic medallist Manu Bhaker leads a strong shooting contingent, while Olympic medallists Mirabai Chanu in weightlifting and PV Sindhu in badminton headline their respective disciplines.

The Quest to Eclipse the Hangzhou Benchmark

The primary challenge for the 503-member squad is whether India can surpass its landmark performance from the 2022 Hangzhou Asian Games, where athletes secured an unprecedented 107 medals, including 28 golds. Despite key injury setbacks, expanded representation across combat sports, archery, shooting, and team events provides the depth required to challenge the historic tally.
