Now based in Colombia, the 30-year-old overcame a grueling 48-hour journey to compete as Argentina’s sole representative.

Ahmedabad: While Indian yoga competitors and numerous counterparts of Indian descent dominate the spotlight at the inaugural World Yogasana Championships here, a flexible South American athlete has captured the attention of both onlookers and fellow competitors through her precise and graceful execution of the poses.
Argentinian competitor Nabila Sol Barraza has emerged as one of the most decorated international participants at the tournament, securing five medals total, including a pair of golds and a pair of silvers, and credits yoga with profoundly reshaping her life, according to a press release.
Born roughly 40 kilometres outside Rosario, the Argentine municipality famous as the birthplace of global soccer star Lionel Messi, Nabila first encountered Yogasana through a university classmate in her homeland. Her initial curiosity evolved into a deep passion that eventually led her to Mumbai, where she resided for nearly half a decade.
During her time there, she acquired some knowledge of Hindi, explored Indian heritage, performed as a background dancer in Bollywood films, collaborated with actor Tiger Shroff, and cultivated an unexpected fondness for cricket.
"I knew how passionate people in Argentina are about football, so I could understand the emotions Indians have for cricket," said Nabila as she spoke about how she is a great fan of former India skipper Virat Kohli.
While cricket connected her to one facet of Indian culture, yoga offered a more profound realisation. Captivated by its core philosophy and life-altering possibilities, Nabila journeyed to Rishikesh, considered the global epicentre of yoga, prior to advancing her education in Nashik.
This rewarding background has since guided the path of the 30-year-old contemporary dance instructor, who was brought up by a single mother alongside two brothers and sisters.
"It has been an amazing journey in India. I loved everything about the country -- the culture, the people and the diversity. I travelled to Rajasthan, Agra, Goa, Chennai and Kolkata. What amazed me most was how different the languages, cuisines and customs can be within one country," said Nabila.
The insights gained from her travels eventually crossed international borders with her. Earlier this year, Nabila relocated to Colombia, where she currently offers both virtual and in-person yoga instruction.
Nabila's dedication was clear well before her arrival at the tournament venue in Ahmedabad. In order to participate in the World Yogasana Championships, Nabila completed an exhausting 48-hour itinerary that took her from Bogota to Toronto, followed by stops in London and Mumbai before arriving in Ahmedabad. Her commitment ultimately brought success.
Performing as the sole athlete representing Argentina, Nabila earned gold medals in both the Twisting Body individual and Back Bend individual events. Beyond the podium, she hopes her achievements will motivate individuals in her home country.
"I am the only Argentine here this year, but I don't think it will be the same next time," she said. "These championships are a wonderful platform to share yoga with the world. I am sure more people from Argentina and Colombia will want to participate in the future."
