Indian badminton star Saina Nehwal has defended herself against online trolls who questioned the legitimacy of her 2012 London Olympic bronze medal. In a recent podcast, Saina's husband, fellow shuttler Parupalli Kashyap, revealed that some critics claimed Saina was "gifted" her medal due to her opponent, China's Wang Xin, retiring with an injury.

Responding to these allegations, Saina fired back, challenging critics to reach Olympic standards themselves. "Try and get yourself up to the level of the Olympics," she said, emphasising the high level of competition required to qualify for the Games.

Saina’s comments came amid broader controversy, including her remarks on wrestler Vinesh Phogat, who was disqualified from the women’s 53kg final at the Paris Olympics for not meeting the weight requirements. Saina had expressed surprise at the mistake given Phogat’s extensive support team, stating, "Such mistakes shouldn't happen at this level. As an athlete, I am feeling bad."
