Thiruvananthapuram has asserted its dominance yet again, looking poised to clinch the title of champion district for the second consecutive year at the Kerala State School Sports Meet, held in the state capital.

As the event is coming to an end, Thiruvananthapuram is currently maintaining an unassailable lead with 1,741 points, standing 898 points ahead of Thrissur, which follows in second place with 843 points. Kannur, with 790 points, is sitting on the the third spot on the leaderboard.

While the top two positions are confirmed, the race for the third place remains tight between Palakkad (756 points) and Kannur.

Thiruvananthapuram’s impressive performance was powered largely by the athletes from G.V. Raja Sports School, who contributed 39 gold, 13 silver, and 22 bronze medals, amassing 256 points in total.

Strong performances by other city schools further strengthened the district’s position. MVHSS Thundathil earned 118 points with 16 gold, 12 silver, and 2 bronze medals, while St. Joseph’s HSS, Thiruvananthapuram, bagged 115 points through 14 gold, 12 silver, and 9 bronze medals.

A major share of the district’s success came from the swimming pool, where Thiruvananthapuram’s swimmers alone contributed a remarkable 649 points. The district had effectively secured the championship title by the time the swimming events concluded.

However, Thiruvananthapuram will likely fall short of last year’s overall tally of 1,935 points. In the previous edition, the district had bagged 227 gold, 150 silver, and 164 bronze medals, compared to 197 gold, 138 silver, and 166 bronze medals so far this year.

Malappuram, which had finished third last year, slipped to fifth place in the overall rankings this time.
