Indian hockey has been plunged into a fresh governance crisis following serious allegations of sexual harassment and abuse of authority against a senior Hockey India official. According to a report by The Times of India, a detailed anonymous complaint has been dispatched to the Director General of the Sports Authority of India (SAI) and Hockey India President, Dilip Tirkey, sparking urgent calls for an independent probe.

The whistleblowing email outlines a disturbing pattern of behaviour, alleging that the official targeted female coaches, players, and umpires. The accusations include:

  • Sexual harassment and inappropriate conduct.

  • Coercion, involving unwanted calls and threats to sabotage professional careers.

  • Financial exploitation, with claims the official demanded money under the guise of coaching opportunities.

  • Soliciting inappropriate photographs from subordinates.

The revelation is particularly damaging given the official’s history. Reports suggest he previously resigned in 2023 following similar internal complaints, only to be quietly reinstated in September 2025. His recent appearance in official World Cup qualifier literature in March 2026 has intensified scrutiny over the sport's "revolving door" for those accused of misconduct.

One umpire, speaking anonymously, claimed they were sidelined after reporting demands for money and pictures. This latest scandal adds to a growing list of controversies, including the legal case against former captain Sandeep Singh.

As pressure mounts, the need for a thorough investigation is being asserted. The need for robust, independent safeguards to protect the integrity of the national sport is being reasserted. (With inputs from Agencies)
