Ferrari pulled the covers off its radical new Formula One challenger Friday, the SF-26, as the Italian team looks to spearhead a new era of technical regulations and recover from a podium-less 2025 campaign.
The car was unveiled at Ferrari’s private Fiorano test track before seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton and teammate Charles Leclerc took to the circuit for the car’s initial shakedown laps.

The SF-26 represents a total design reset for the Scuderia. Built to the FIA’s sweeping 2026 mandates, the car is shorter, narrower, and features a "nimble" chassis intended to improve wheel-to-wheel racing. It is the first Ferrari power unit since 2014 to eliminate the MGU-H (Heat) system, instead relying on a massive 350kW electrical boost from kinetic energy recovery.
Technical Revolution
The SF-26 is a departure from its predecessors in both form and function. Key technical shifts include:
- Active Aerodynamics: The car features movable front and rear wing elements that adjust automatically to reduce drag on straights and maximise downforce in corners.
- Manual Override: Replacing the traditional DRS, the car includes a new "Overtake Mode" allowing drivers an extra burst of electrical energy when within one second of a rival.
- Hybrid Split: The power unit now generates nearly 50% of its total output from electrical systems, a significant increase from the previous 150kW.
- Sustainable Fuel: Ferrari confirmed the engine will run on 100% advanced sustainable fuels, a cornerstone of the 2026 regulations.
A Critical Reset for Hamilton
For Hamilton, the launch marks the beginning of a high-stakes second year in Maranello. His debut 2025 season was widely characterised as a struggle as he failed to record a single podium finish and was consistently out-qualified by Leclerc.
The team has reshuffled Hamilton's technical support for 2026, though a permanent replacement for his former race engineer Riccardo Adami, who was moved to the Ferrari Driver Academy last week, has not yet been confirmed.
"We have taken an aggressive approach to every millimetre of this car," Team Principal Fred Vasseur said during the launch. "The 2026 rules are a clean sheet of paper, and our goal is to ensure Ferrari is the team that writes the first chapter of this new history."
The Road Ahead
Ferrari is the fifth team to unveil its 2026 car, following launches by Red Bull, Audi, Mercedes, and Haas. The SF-26 will now be transported to Spain for a private five-day collective test in Barcelona starting next week, which will be held behind closed doors.
Fans will get their first look at the car in competitive trim during the first televised pre-season test in Bahrain in early February.
