Mercedes-AMG Petronas became the latest Formula 1 team to offer a glimpse into the sport’s next era Thursday, releasing the first digital images of its 2026 challenger, the W17 E Performance.

The unveiling of the new livery comes alongside the announcement of a major new technical partnership with Microsoft, reportedly worth $60 million annually. The deal is set to be the third most lucrative on the grid, placing the tech giant's branding prominently on the car’s engine cover and team kit.

The W17 Design

The 2026 livery marks a return to the "Silver Arrows" identity while incorporating modern flourishes. Key design elements include:

  • The 'Green Flow': A dynamic Petronas-green line that sweeps across the car, emphasising speed and harmonising the transition from iconic Mercedes silver to deep black.
  • Signature Details: The top of the sidepods features an AMG-inspired rhombus signature, complementing the three-pointed star pattern on the engine cover.
  • Technical Shift: In accordance with the 2026 regulations, the W17 is smaller, narrower, and lighter than its predecessor. It features active aerodynamics, including moveable front and rear wings, and a power unit with a near 50/50 split between electric and combustion power.

Leadership and Stability

Mercedes enters this regulatory "reset" with the stable driver pairing of George Russell and Kimi Antonelli, who helped the team secure second in the 2025 Constructors' Championship.

"Formula 1 will undergo significant change in 2026, and we are prepared for that transition," said Team Principal and CEO Toto Wolff. "The new regulations demand innovation and absolute focus. Our work on the new car, and the development of sustainable fuels with Petronas, reflects that approach."

The Road to Australia

The digital reveal is the first of a two-stage launch process for the Brackley-based squad:

  • Jan. 26–30: The W17 will undergo its first on-track running during a private shakedown at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya.
  • Feb. 2: The team will host an official Digital Season Launch event featuring Wolff, Russell, and Antonelli to provide in-depth technical insights.
  • Feb. 11–13: Official pre-season testing begins in Bahrain.

Mercedes is widely viewed as a pre-season favourite, with rumours circulating that the team may have identified a technical advantage within the new engine regulations, a scenario reminiscent of their dominant start to the hybrid era in 2014.
