New Delhi: The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) is facing internal discord regarding the appointment of its CEO. On Thursday, IOA President P.T. Usha and other members reportedly split into two factions during an executive committee meeting. The conflict stems from the January decision to appoint Raghuram Iyer as the Chief Executive Officer, a move opposed by 12 members of the committee, including Senior Vice President Ajay Patel.
The crux of the dispute revolves around Iyer's salary package. Several members have demanded the annulment of his appointment and a fresh round of applications to be opened.
Demand for agenda discussion rejected
Adding to the tension, Usha declined a request from the opposing members to discuss 14 issues listed on the meeting agenda. Among the key concerns raised was the alleged misuse of funds, particularly in relation to additional expenditure for the upcoming Paris Olympics. Members have called for an investigation into these financial irregularities.
P.T. Usha, however, stood firm on her position, stating that the CEO's appointment had already been approved and re-opening the process would negatively impact India’s ambition to host future Olympics, especially as the country is actively bidding for the 2036 Games.
Show-cause notice issued to joint secretary
In a separate development, President Usha has issued a show-cause notice to IOA Joint Secretary Kalyan Chaubey. The notice came after Chaubey granted recognition to the Taekwondo Association without the governing body's approval.
