England set themselves up for a memorable triumph as Stokes and Archer ripped through the Indian lineup in the first hour, claiming three wickets — including those of Rishabh Pant and KL Rahul — before Woakes struck just before lunch to dismiss Nitish Kumar Reddy

From the moment India lost four wickets in the morning mayhem of Day 5 at Lord’s, Shubman Gill and Co. found themselves staring down the barrel of a humbling defeat. What began as a chase of 135 runs with six wickets in hand quickly turned into a scramble for survival, as England’s relentless attack turned the famous old ground into a graveyard for Indian hopes.
In the end, it took a solo act of defiance from Ravindra Jadeja to keep the dream alive. His gritty stand, supported briefly by the lower order, dragged India tantalisingly close before they were bowled out for 170 in 74.5 overs — heartbreakingly short of what would have been a miracle win.
Skipper Ben Stokes and a fiery Jofra Archer turned tormentors-in-chief, snaring three wickets apiece. Brydon Carse chipped in with two, while Chris Woakes struck at the stroke of lunch to break India’s last flickering resistance. Former captain Sunil Gavaskar summed it up sharply on Sony Sports:
“A partnership of 60-70 would have made the difference. India never got that. You could say Jadeja could have taken the odd chance rather than the aerial route, but full marks to him.”
England’s charge was set in motion when Archer cleaned up Rishabh Pant with a searing delivery that left Pant’s off-stump somersaulting. Stokes, defying fatigue, trapped KL Rahul plumb in front — needing Decision Review System to overturn the umpire’s call, but leaving no doubt on the replay.
Archer’s brilliance didn’t stop there; he then plucked a stunning one-handed catch in his follow-through to send Washington Sundar back for a duck. At 82/7, Jadeja and debutant Nitish Kumar Reddy dug in, fending, prodding, and occasionally stealing quick runs to inch past the 100-run mark.
There was drama too — Jadeja collided mid-run with Brydon Carse but bounced back up to carry on the fight. Reddy broke a boundary drought of 80 balls with an uppish drive through cover before fate intervened: Woakes found his edge just before lunch, and Jamie Smith completed the catch behind the stumps.
With that, India was left hoping for a twist that never came. England wrapped it up after the break, sealing a win that felt both clinical and hard-earned, and leaving Jadeja’s valiant knock as a footnote to what might have been an epic escape.
