Guardiola, who insists it is the "right time" to step down, will transition into a global ambassador role for the club.

Manchester: Manager Pep Guardiola struggled to contain his emotions on the sideline Sunday as he concluded his transformative 10-year tenure at Manchester City.
His final match at the helm ended in a 2-1 defeat against Aston Villa, a contest secondary to the highly emotional farewell dedicated to a manager who orchestrated a decade of unprecedented dominance in English soccer.
"I never could have imagined the amount of love I've found," Guardiola told the capacity crowd from the centre of the pitch at the Etihad Stadium. "It is an incredible, tremendous honour to be your manager, to be here 10 years."
The emotional weight of the afternoon manifested well before the final whistle. Guardiola visibly wept and wiped his eyes as two of his long-serving players, Bernardo Silva and John Stones, also marked their departures from the club, receiving guards of honour upon being substituted in the second half.
Following the match, the manager received his own ceremonial guard of honour.
"This is the man who changed everything," the stadium public address announcer proclaimed as Guardiola entered the pitch wearing khakis and a cream-colored T-shirt amid deafening applause.
The baseline support prompted the crowd to chant, "10 more years," to which Guardiola responded with a definitive shake of his head.
Having secured 17 major trophies and numerous statistical records, Guardiola had confirmed on Friday that his work at the club was complete. After elevating Manchester City into the most dominant Premier League franchise of its generation and securing its inaugural European championship, he maintained that the timing was correct to relinquish control.
"I will not miss it for a while," he remarked on Sunday. "I feel deeply... it is the right decision."
A Decade of Historic Benchmarks
Guardiola arrived at Manchester City in the summer of 2016, guiding the Abu Dhabi-owned institution to six Premier League titles and a historic first Champions League crown in 2023.
"That's what we always wanted ... we'd never done it," 82-year-old Manchester City supporter Fred Taylor told The Associated Press. "That was probably the highlight of his tenure. I can't think of another manager that's done what he's done in the 10-year period he's been here."
Guardiola’s final campaign yielded a domestic cup double, capturing both the English League Cup and the FA Cup. His landmark 2023 season saw the club achieve the continental treble—the Premier League, Champions League, and FA Cup—replicating a feat accomplished only once before in English soccer history by Manchester United in 1999.
Under his stewardship, Manchester City established several historic milestones, becoming the first English club to capture four consecutive top-flight league titles and the first to accumulate 100 points in a single season, achieved in 2018. The subsequent year, the franchise became the first to secure a clean sweep of English domestic honours by winning the league, the FA Cup, and the League Cup concurrently.
Guardiola cautioned that supporters must maintain realistic expectations for his ultimate successor.
"Fans don't forget that winning the treble, doubles is exceptional," he noted. "It is so difficult, this business is so complicated. That's why when you come here, you win one game, here in the Etihad - enjoy it. Celebrate it."
Transition and Lasting Legacy
Former Chelsea strategist Enzo Maresca, who secured the Club World Cup last year, has emerged as the leading candidate to assume the managerial vacancy, with an official announcement anticipated in the coming week.
While Guardiola did not explicitly confirm the appointment, he indicated he intends to contact his successor to offer structural counsel.
"Be yourself... be free with your ideas and work a lot. Everything will be fine," Guardiola advised.
Beyond tactical achievements, Guardiola forged a deep cultural connection with the Manchester City fan base. On Sunday, he lightheartedly instructed supporters to offer him a hug should they encounter him in the future, stating, "I will need it."
"It's hard to describe, it's someone you don't actually know, but you feel like you do know," club supporter Richard Wilbourn reflected. "When I heard the news (he was leaving), I got a bit emotional. What he's done for the club has been absolutely unreal, and it's something that we've never seen in our lifetime. Growing up through my mid-20s to mid-30s (he's been) a massive part of my life."
To permanently commemorate his impact, Manchester City has announced that its newly expanded north stand will bear Guardiola's name. Additionally, the departing manager is slated to transition into a corporate role as a global ambassador for the club.
