Foxborough: France secured a clinical 4-1 victory against Norway in their Group I FIFA World Cup encounter, headlined by a record-breaking performance from Ousmane Dembélé.

The French forward produced a devastating display of attacking football at Boston Stadium, netting a first-half hat-trick that dismantled the Norwegian defence. Dembélé found the back of the net in the 7th, 20th, and 32nd minutes. This achievement marked the first first-half hat-trick at a men’s World Cup since Russia’s Oleg Salenko accomplished the feat against Cameroon in 1994.

The opening goal arrived early, with Dembélé capitalising on a precise long-range diagonal pass from Kylian Mbappé to drive inside and finish powerfully. He doubled his tally in the 20th minute, shifting onto his left foot to curl a strike into the far corner. Despite a brief moment of resistance from Norway, who pulled a goal back through Thelo Aasgaard in the 21st minute, Dembélé remained relentless. He completed his treble in the 32nd minute, again cutting in from the right to place a calm left-footed finish past the goalkeeper.

Dembélé’s 32-minute hat-trick is the second-fastest from kick-off in men’s World Cup history, trailing only the 24-minute record set by Austria’s Erich Probst in 1954. The victory was rounded off in the 90th minute, when Désiré Doué added a fourth goal for Les Bleus in stoppage time.

The win solidifies France's dominant position in the group stages. Both nations entered the match having already secured their progression to the round of 32, but the performance served as a significant statement of intent from Didier Deschamps' squad. For Norway, the evening was further complicated by a missed penalty from Jørgen Strand Larsen early in the second half, which prevented any hope of a sustained comeback.

Dembélé’s four-goal tally for the tournament now places him among the leading contenders for the Golden Boot, joining teammate Kylian Mbappé, Norway’s Erling Haaland, and Brazil’s Vinícius Júnior in the upper echelons of the scoring charts.
