Foxborough: Ousmane Dembélé produced a historic individual masterclass at the Boston Stadium on Saturday (IST), firing France to a commanding 3-1 lead over Norway at halftime, in their final Group I fixture of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The Paris Saint-Germain forward completed his hat-trick within the opening 32 minutes, a feat that marks the first time a player has scored a first-half hat-trick at a FIFA World Cup since 1994.

A Rapid-Fire Display

France wasted little time asserting their dominance against a heavily rotated Norwegian side. Dembélé opened the scoring in the seventh minute, dancing through the defence before rifling a right-footed shot into the net. He doubled the advantage in the 20th minute, shifting the ball onto his left foot to curl a strike into the far corner. Although Norway's Thelo Aasgaard responded almost immediately with a clinical finish in the 21st minute, Dembélé restored the two-goal cushion in the 32nd minute, racing through to complete his treble.

Record-Breaking Significance

Beyond the immediate impact on the match, the performance has earned a unique place in tournament history. Dembélé is the first player to net a first-half hat-trick in the tournament since Oleg Salenko's hat-trick in 1994. He netted three of his record-breaking five goals against Cameroon in the first half (14', 41', 44'-penalty), making him the last player to do so before 2026. The 32-minute treble serves as a new national record for the fastest hat-trick scored by a French player in FIFA World Cup history as well.

Dembélé entered the 2026 tournament having failed to find the back of the net in 19 previous major tournament appearances. With his three goals against Norway, he has moved to four for the tournament, cementing his status as a key attacking force for Didier Deschamps’ side as they advance into the Round of 32 with a perfect group stage record.
