Liverpool: After nine long years, and on their 11th attempt, Manchester United finally ended their Anfield hoodoo with a 2-1 win over Premier League defending champions Liverpool on Sunday.

Harry Maguire’s header in the 84th minute secured one of United’s most significant victories under coach Ruben Amorim and marked Liverpool’s fourth consecutive defeat in all competitions. The defender’s celebration in front of traveling United fans reflected the frustration of years of painful experiences on Merseyside.

Liverpool had looked poised to salvage a draw when Cody Gakpo equalized in the 78th minute after United had taken an early lead through Bryan Mbeumo’s strike in the second minute.

Meanwhile, Aston Villa staged a thrilling comeback to defeat Tottenham 2-1 in another Premier League clash. Emi Buendia’s curling effort in the 77th minute at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium sealed Villa’s victory.

Buendia “shimmied his way across the edge of the box before sweeping a perfect shot low into the bottom corner,” helping Villa continue their resurgence after a poor start to the season. The win also denied Spurs a chance to provisionally move up to second place in the standings.

Tottenham had taken an early lead when Rodrigo Bentancur scored in the fifth minute, but Morgan Rogers equalized in the 37th before Villa’s late winner. The result marked Tottenham coach Thomas Frank’s second league loss since taking over in the summer, while Villa celebrated their fifth-straight win across all competitions.
