Moments after teammate Ismaël Koné was stretchered off with a severe leg injury following a red-card challenge, Saliba subbed on and netted a goal.

Vancouver: Canadian midfielder Nathan Saliba produced one of the most poignant moments of the 2026 FIFA World Cup by dedicating Canada's fourth goal to his seriously injured teammate, Ismaël Koné, during their Group B clash against Qatar at BC Place Stadium.
The emotional tribute followed a distressing incident early in the second half. In the 51st minute, Koné suffered what appeared to be a severe leg injury after a late challenge from Qatar’s Assim Madibo. Canadian players immediately formed a protective circle around the midfielder to shield him from television cameras before he was stretchered off to a standing ovation. Following a Video Assistant Referee (VAR) review, Madibo’s initial yellow card was upgraded to a straight red card in the 54th minute.

An Immediate Impact and Moving Tribute
Saliba was subbed on to replace the departing Koné in the 56th minute. It took the young midfielder just eight minutes to leave an indelible mark on the game.
In the 64th minute, Canada were awarded a free-kick just outside the Qatari penalty area. Saliba stepped up and curled a precise strike around the defensive wall, sending the ball into the back of the net via the inside of the post. The goal was notably the first direct free-kick scored at the 2026 tournament.

Rather than engaging in standard celebrations, Saliba ran straight to the Canadian touchline. The substitute retrieved Koné’s number 8 jersey and proudly held it aloft towards all four sides of the Vancouver stadium, a gesture of solidarity that drew deafening applause from the home crowd.
As per reports, Koné has been transported directly to a local hospital with his leg stabilised, leaving his tournament future in serious doubt despite the triumphant display from his teammates on the pitch.
