Vancouver: Canadian midfielder Ismaël Koné has been stretchered off the pitch following a severe injury during Canada’s ongoing FIFA World Cup Group B encounter against Qatar at BC Place Stadium.

The distressing incident occurred in the 51st minute of the match when Koné was caught by a late tackle from Qatar’s Assim Madibo. The 23-year-old midfielder immediately reacted in visible anguish regarding his leg. In a touching show of solidarity, Canadian teammates formed a protective circle around the stricken player to shield him from broadcast cameras before he was carried away for medical treatment.

The challenge initially resulted in a yellow card, but following a video assistant referee (VAR) review in the 54th minute, Madibo was shown a straight red card for the tackle. Koné was subsequently replaced in the 56th minute.

Dominant Display Marred by Dismay

The severe injury has cast a shadow over what has otherwise been a flawless, commanding performance by the co-hosts. Canada took control of the game from the opening whistle. Forward Cyle Larin opened the scoring in the 16th minute, pouncing quickly on a rebound after an initial shot from Jonathan David was blocked.

Canada’s advantage was doubled in the 29th minute when David capitalised on a cross, hammering a spectacular volley past Qatari goalkeeper Mahmoud Abunada.

Qatar's disciplinary issues began well before Koné's injury. In the 33rd minute, defender Homam Ahmed was sent off for denying an obvious goalscoring opportunity after bringing down Tajon Buchanan just outside the penalty area. Seizing on the numerical advantage, David struck again in first-half stoppage time to secure his brace and put Canada 3-0 ahead.

Group B Outlook

As the match progressed through the second half, Canada extended their lead to 6-0 and ended up winning their first World Cup match.

With this victory, Canada moved up to four points in Group B, levelling with Switzerland, putting them in an excellent position to secure qualification for the knockout rounds.
