Missouri: Argentina goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez has participated in his first complete training session using both gloves following his recovery from a fractured finger.

The Aston Villa standout fractured a bone in the ring finger of his right hand on May 20 during pre-match warm-ups prior to the English club's victory over Freiburg in the Europa League final. ESPN reported that Martinez initially conducted modified training sessions wearing a medical splint and a single glove during the early stages of his rehabilitation.

The goalkeeper rejoined his teammates for unconstrained training on Thursday. He is projected to feature in the starting lineup for Argentina's 2026 FIFA World Cup opening match against Algeria on June 16 (June 17 6:30 AM IST) in Kansas City, after sitting out recent exhibition victories over Honduras and Iceland.

The 33-year-old enjoyed a highly successful domestic campaign with Aston Villa, helping the club secure a fourth-place finish in the Premier League and earning selection to the Europa League Team of the Season.

A primary contributor to Argentina's 2022 World Cup title, Martinez was honoured as the premier goalkeeper of that tournament and subsequently captured the Golden Glove award during the national team's successful 2024 Copa America campaign.

In a corresponding roster move, defender Marcos Senesi has been added to the squad to replace the injured Leonardo Balerdi ahead of the tournament, the Argentine Football Association (AFA) announced Thursday.

According to Reuters, a calf injury forced Balerdi's removal from the defending champions' 26-man roster for the global showpiece.

Senesi, 29, concluded a four-year tenure with Premier League side Bournemouth, stretching from 2022 to 2026 and is set to join Tottenham Hotspur. He has earned three international caps for Argentina during his career.

The defender played a vital role in guiding Bournemouth to a sixth-place finish in the recent Premier League season, securing the club's inaugural qualification for the UEFA Europa League and its first appearance in European competition.

Argentina is scheduled to launch its World Cup schedule against Algeria on June 16 before completing its Group J fixtures against Austria and Jordan.
